Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical technique that can treat most varicose and spider veins in the legs. Each sclerotherapy treatment takes about 20 minutes and the number of treatments depends on the severity of the problem. Most patients report no pain or a very mild, temporary discomfort. You may resume normal activity immediately after treatment and exercising and walking are encouraged.
Vein problem areas tend to worsen over time, in order to prevent the spread of these problem areas it is best to start treatment before experiencing symptoms such as pain, fatigue, itching, burning and swelling.  You might even experience throbbing and restlessness caused by untreated veins, to the point that you feel the need to keep your legs constantly moving. Treatment will help to resolve these symptoms.

It is difficult to determine how many sclerotherapy treatments a patient will require without examining the problematic area. Call (703) 448-8818 or click here to schedule a free consultation, or ask a question. Get the treatment and experience you deserve at the The Vein And Laser Clinic.

What are varicose and spider veins?
Veins that can be seen near the surface of the skin that is generally swollen and dark are varicose veins. They typically appear on the legs. Similarly, spider veins are like small varicose veins that appear closer to the skin surface.

Why are varicose and spider veins formed?
Varicose veins usually happen when small valves in veins break allowing blood to travel  in the wrong direction. This causes the veins to swell and backfill with stagnant blood. They can also appear deep under your skin, where you are not able to see them.

What causes varicose veins?
Genetics is the largest percent of veins disease. With more than 80% of the vein problems being caused by genes.  Although pregnancy, obesity, and standing for long periods of time  can help to aggravate vein disease, it doesn’t mean that all these conditions actually cause it.

What do varicose and spider veins look like:
They appear as enlarged, twisted dark red or blue lines beneath the skin. Many people describe them like rope-like, and threadlike.

Who is the best candidate for this treatment?
If you have any kind of veins that have led to discomfort or caused distress due to the appearance, you are a candidate for this treatment.

What does treatment to remove varicose and spider veins involve?
To resolve varicose and spider veins, the doctor at the Vein and Laser clinic will determine the best type of treatment necessary for your specific needs. We offer sclerotherapy (micro-injections of a liquid medicine that closes the veins and which are then absorbed by the body over time), laser therapy (treatment for small varicose veins, commonly called spider veins). Schedule a no obligation consultation, call (703)-448-8818 or click here if you’d like to find out the best treatment option for you.

How many treatments will I need?
It’s impossible to determine how many treatments or what kind of treatment will be required without having an evaluation of the problem. Further non-invasive ultrasound testing will be performed if necessary and then an individual treatment plan will be developed for you. All this is done during a no-obligation consultation at The Vein and Laser Clinic with our Phlebologist Dr. Michael Clemens.

What can be expected after treatment?
You will be able to return to your daily activities right away, and can go back to strenuous activity after 2 days. On occasion, patients may experience small raised bumps or hives, and itching or tingling feelings immediately following or during treatment that will resolve in a few hours. Blood vessels gradually lighten and fade away within a few weeks after treatment, with larger veins generally taking longer to disappear.

Does vein treatment cause any side effects?
Side effects and complications are not likely. Some patients may experience mild bruising in the injected area. Complications resulting sclerotherapy or laser treatments are rare. Some discomfort can occur, which in the worst cases is easily managed with pain medication.
